Australia's Cyclonic Cocktail

Darwin displays a cocktail of cultures from ‘Aussie larrikins’ to the local Aboriginals from Larrakia Country. Throw in an influx of international visitors who now call the Top End of Australia home, and this concoction bedazzles with busy outdoor markets and an adequate supply of drinking holes (pubs).

The modern Darwin Wharf precinct, including Stokes Hill Wharf, still gleams on those endless summer days having been rebuilt after the destruction caused both during World War II bombings and Cyclone Tracey. Grab a bar stool with a view of the harbour or a seat on a terrace and sip a cool drink in Australia’s northernmost, tropical capital city.

A popular time for tourists is Darwin’s dry season that starts in May and ends in October. If you prefer it hot and humid, then the end of the wet season can be spectacular when the waterfalls in Kakadu and Litchfield national parks are at their mightiest.

Australia’s wild frontier can be reached all the way from Adelaide and Alice Springs along the picturesque Stuart Highway that ends at Daly Street in the CBD. Outside the centre are the natural surrounds in Palmerston, Humpty Doo and closer by is Mindil Beach with its famous Sunset Market.

Darwin International Airport has international flights from Singapore and Bali. You can choose from a variety of hotels, hostels and apartments on Perths Hotel.

We loved the unique country town vibe of Darwin and the simplicity of being able to access everything in the city, pretty much on foot, as it is a remarkably small city. Darwin's city has a beautiful charm about it, with magnificent street art adorning buildings everywhere, a gentle pace of life, warm evenings outdoors, night markets, and what we loved most about this multi-cultural city was the unique respect the different races had for one another. I never heard anyone put another race down. I felt totally safe walking around the harbour and beaches late at night as there was no evidence of violence, fighting, abusive language - just people of all ages having fun. The fishing was incredible. Our adult son did an 8 hour fishing charter out of Darwin, that turned into a 10 hour fishing charter. He arrived back with over 10kgs of fish which was carefully packaged for him by the charter, placed into a foam esky and frozen for us to collect on our way to the airport for our return flight home. Never before in his 42 years has he had success like this on another fishing charter. Love, love, loved Darwin and what's more, it has so much to offer.

We had never been to the New Territories, and a friend had highly recommended the Kakadu National Park. We were disappointed to learn that Darwin has no swimming beaches because crocodiles rule, but we kept our plans. We took a 12 hour bus trip into the Kakadu, involving about nine hours on a bus. Although we were glad to see the 20,000 year old Aboriginal Rock Art and watch crocodiles jump for meat, we wouldn't do that exhausting trip again. The food was the pleasant surprise: we had a fine, healthy dinner at the hotel, a great lunch at the pub Wisdom Bar, which has outdoor smoke-free seating, and a surprisingly good final dinner at Oishi-ya, a Japanese restaurant on Mitchell Street. The walk home along the Esplanade at sunset, with the faint smell of smoke from bush fires in the air, was memorable.

8 We are long time Darwin people.
We are long time Darwin people. We are able to stay close to family and friends. We ate at the best fish and chip place at Fisherman's Wharf. We knew where to go in Darwin which made it easy to get around. Nothing to avoid except busy times on the road.

8 October is hot 35 average and humid.
October is hot 35 average and humid. It is the build up before the wet season. We still did plenty of walking around and saw everything we wanted to. The food was great as were the prices. We used Uber and buses for local trips and did tours for the longer trips. This was good because we saw things we otherwise wouldn’t have. The Waterfront was a favourite place to eat as was the Mindill market but the food was good everywhere

Darwin is different to what I expected but is an interesting place to visit, especially to see nearby parts of NT which is beautiful. Litchfield & jumping crocs tour a must. Mindil beach (we missed markets - so disappointed!) is lovely. Croc Cove zoo is fantastic. Book somewhere with a pool as you can rarely swim in beaches and it is hot! Look at for awesome street art on the buildings

10 Darwin is an amazing city to visit.
Darwin is an amazing city to visit. There are so many activities to see and do. The wharf is an absolute must for eating - Grilled Barra and Chips has to be experienced ! All the markets are worth visiting - get there early as it does get crowded. Litchfield VIP Tours are 100% worth doing if you want to get to know lots of great things about the area and see parts of the National park that you would miss if you went independently. The Deckchair theatre is also amazing and worth the experience - they have food down at the theatre also which is something we didn't realise. We travelled by hire car - be aware of the distances between places as most cars have a km limit so travel smartly - we did the Litchfield Tour to avoid using excess km. So much to see and do - carry a water bottle and enjoy every moment !!

This hotel was perfect in every respect. The location in the Waterfront Precinct was very convenient, especially with a free shuttle stop right outside the door. Staff were incredibly helpful, calling cabs, weighing luggage, and printing park passes for us. An excellent breakfast was included in the attached restaurant and offered a wide range of choices. Vouchers given to us to defray dinner costs were appreciated and made our stay here very economical. If we ever return to Darwin, we definitely will stay here!

Hotel in Darwin CBD, Darwin
We recently had two stays at this hotel in a one bedroom apartment. It was excellent to be self contained, the laundry facilities were well used after a few remote trips in between stays. Due to the location it was an easy walk to wherever we needed to go. One Sunday afternoon we caught the bus to Mindle Market. The staff we encountered were friendly, efficient and always with a smile. We slept really well and loved the view over Darwin from the 25th floor. We highly recommend this hotel.

The man who owns and operates the hotel (from the 1970's) is so nice, comes from the days when someone can't do enough for you. A really genuine person. The rooms are beautiful, all done up. Safe and secure with a pristine pool and safe off street parking, in a very nice neighbourhood, close to shops, markets, the airport and the City. We loved our stay in Darwin. Thank you, we'll be back!

We were in Darwin for a family funeral and the City Gardens Apartments suited us perfectly! We could walk to the shops and we were also close to the Cathedral for the funeral. We had a downstairs unit which was perfect for access to the pool, and the manager was very accommodating when we needed extra towels etc. Thanks for your hospitality!

Out-of-CBD location is no problem because Darwin isnt a massive sprawling city: easy access to night markets, the waterfront, CBD and shopping precincts. After a long day of driving, it was a relief to arrive at these pleasant, peaceful apartments with clean facilities and kitchenette, as well as a laundrette and nifty little swimming pool.

We were in the Darwin area for the Pitch Black 2022 exercise. While the hotel wasn't actually in Darwin, it was close enough for use - just a drive down the road. The A/C worked great. the room was huge.
