ROOPA PEMMERAJU is a luxury ready-to-wear line featuring the original artworks of renown Indigenous Australian artists on a canvas of ethically hand-woven Indian fabrics. Beginning in Australia, designs are developed in collaboration with artists from initial concept to finished garments, consulting at every stage of the design process to ensure they support the translation from painting to print placement. Spring Summer 2013 to 2014 features artists from Warlukurlangu community, each piece celebrating the vibrant colours of the Australian landscape; green plant life, red sand, spring wildflowers, wild bush berries and fruits, the deep blues and reds of rock formations and the vibrant desert sky. Skilled artisans specialising in hand weaving fabrics, environmentally sustainable print-blocking and hand embellishment, are then employed and work in superior conditions from a Bangalore-based atelier to produce beautiful pieces featuring the bold, graphic artworks. Only natural dyes derived from organic sources are used, producing the pure shades and subtle variability needed to reproduce the artists' designs with integrity while also being kind to the planet. High value is placed on traditional designs and natural materials, as is making a positive contribution to the lives and wellbeing of artisans, communities and the environment. ROOPA PEMMERAJU believes in Fair Trade and ethical dealings with artists and their communities. Royalties from the sale of each garment are returned to artists' communities.
