On the fifth of July 1876, the Geltwood, a three masted hull barque, on its maiden voyage from England was tragically wrecked a mile off shore, 16 kilometres from Rivoli Bay. There were no survivors.
One of the Geltwood anchors, as well as interpretive panels, can be viewed in Southend at a lookout on Cape Buffon Drive, opposite the National Park Ranger Headquarters. It is a memorial to those who have perished at sea, including local amateur and professional fishermen who have lost their lives at sea.
Another Geltwood anchor can also seen at the Millicent National Trust Living History Museum in the Shipwreck Room.
