The Up-To-Date Store Cultural Precinct includes the Up-To-Date Store museum, an RSL museum, Ajanta Cafe and the town library.
The Up-To-Date Store is a turn-of-the-century department store, where customers seated themselves on a stool before a long counter to be served by a white-aproned salesperson. The store departments included grocery, ironmongery, crockery, drapery, mercery, millinery, haberdashery, clothing, footwear and agricultural supplies. In fact, it is true that anything and everything, from a plough to a piano could be purchased at the Up-To-Date Store.
The store remains as a visual reminder of the ingenuity and skill of local architects, builders, retail traders and their staff. It includes the world’s only known Ball-Style Cash Railway System that is still in its original location. The Up-to-Date Store’s social and historical significance was acknowledged with its listing on the State Heritage Register in 2006.
The museum also includes agricultural machinery collection, miniature working agricultural machines, and the neighbouring RSL armed forces museum, also free.
Ajanta Cafe is a cozy haven. Ajanta means to engage all the senses, with enticing coffee aromas, calming music, the taste of homemade cakes, and an amazing array of homewares that keeps your eyes wandering.
